. Lush evergreen foliage that by late January will terminate in large heads of apple green flowers, which last well into late spring, tolerant of dry soil, but shelter must be given from cold winds, growing up to 24ins. £3.75

foetidus (Wester Flisk Group). Foliage tinted red especially pronounced in the cold winter months. Green flowers edged red, are produced in late winter, 16ins, tolerant of shade but colouring better in the sun. £3.75

HOSTA HOSTACEAE
A deservedly popular genus that has spawned a bewildering array of cultivars, but a small selection provide any garden with bold foliage that gives weight and structure to fussy and more ephemeral plants. All require fertile soil and annual topdressing of compost will be rewarded with even more luxuriant foliage, but just watch out for those slugs. For partial shade but tolerant of full sun unless stated otherwise.

`Blue Angel` (sieboldiana) AGM. NEW FOR 2004 Enormous puckered blue grey foliage, which will provide form and stability to the fussiest of neighbours. White-ish on 4ft stems, and a 4ft spread. For light to full shade. £4.50

undulalta var. albomarginata. Previously known as `Thomas Hogg`, a robust plant with a broad white margin to the corrugated leaves, lilac flowers in mid summer up to 24ins, a handsome plant in combination with Veronica `Crater Lake Blue', can be a bit of a martyr to slugs and snails. £4.50
